Hello.
I have found this web site and it might be a good place to start. Does anyone from the Osmington Society check this blog?
I was born in Weymouth and was always proud to tell people that our town was the favourite seaside resort of King George III who the town celebrates with the King’s statue and more. What a great heritage to publicise in addition to the Jurassic Coastline.
It is great that in 2012/13 the White horse was restored and it briefly looked great. However since then it has weathered very quickly so that it now blends into the hillside colour so much you would struggle to point it out to a visitor to the town. Maybe in hindsight the materials used were not suitable and pure chalk shoudl have been used?
There are some fine examples of white horses & other hillside monuments in England (such as the Cerne Giant or Westbury White horse) but it is a crying shame that our own White horse is not one of them & is no longer white.
Surely we can open discussions to embark on a task to rectify this. I for one would be happy to volunteer to help make this happen.
Who should we contact to get the ball rolling?
Thanks.
Simon Litster
Hi,may i say the White horse today looks absolutely terrible! Ive seen it from around 1966 onwards. It was a lovely crisp white in the 1960s and 70s. Its now practically disappeared. Surely some kind of environmently white paint could be applied every 2 years! I am willing to volunteer and apply it myself, just give me the materials!
We were on holiday in the area and were looking for a viewpoint, the two times when we passed by, the white horse. Could not see any signs for the viewpoint, the children wanted to stop but the road is busy. I have checked Google and Maps and there are no directions or location that can be found , save only that it is on the A353.
Shame its location is not promoted as the hard work that has gone into the creation is being underutilized.
